Curriculum

 

Our curriculum is broad, balanced and relevant. It aims to engage the imagination and enrich children’s lives by developing curiosity and an understanding of the world around them.

All the subjects of the new National Curriculum are covered in our whole school topics. The bedrock for all learning is English, so reading, phonic knowledge, spelling and grammar are key disciplines within our school.

We believe that children are naturally curious and our curriculum is based on questions which lead to discovery. Teachers assess the children’s knowledge of a subject and adapt their teaching accordingly.  If you would like to know more about our curriculum, please speak to the class teachers.

Children need to be encouraged to live healthy lives and to be good citizens. Our curriculum promotes healthy lifestyles with an excellent programme of physical activity, in lessons, at playtimes and after school.

When we identify children who are particularly gifted (in academic subjects) or talented (in the arts or PE) we enable them to work with others at a similar level. Gifted children work with a higher year group and talented children have activities with other schools in the area so that their abilities are recognised and they are challenged.

Children need to develop good social skills and we have high expectations of behaviour. In Barby CE Primary we have three rules. They are worded as questions as we always encourage our children to be reflective. Our rules are:

  • Is it sensible?
  • Is it kind?
  • Is it your best?
